“Zach our Lancashire Champion does a smash and grab”
Blackburn with Darwen, Thursday 13th February 2019: Zach Walmsley a member Blackburn with Darwen’s performance swimming club Blackburn Centurions wins the Boys 14 age group 50m Backstroke at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. Zach swam an amazing 30.25secs to win the “Gold Medal” in the final. Significantly this puts Zach 6thnationally for his age at the 50m backstroke announces the club. The objective of the Championships is to bring together the fastest swimmers from swimming clubs in Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside together to compete in the various disciplines. Blackburn Centurions has been a consistent contributor of swimmers every year. This year has seen notable swims from many Centurions with many swims leading to a qualification in the different individual events finals.
Blackburn Centurions Coach, Darren Newsham, from Darwen, says “The whole team has spent many hours training to get to this level. Everybody who represented the club has worked so hard. Just qualifying in the county championships is no mean feat. This is a culmination of the team’s hard work in training and the dedication it takes to get to this level. Zach is the icing on the cake for this very talented young squad we have at Blackburn Centurions. I am sure I speak for the whole swim team, committee and parents wishing Zach further success in the up and coming Summer Regionals Championships and Nationals along with his teammates. All the coaching staff are delighted to see our swimmers realise all their hard work and how their success ripples across the club to all the other swimmers we have in the club.
Zach Walmsley, age 14 and a pupil at Cannon Slade says “I was very happy with gaining a PB and the Gold was a nice bonus. The hard work continues to improve further for Regionals and qualification for the National Championships”
Blackburn Centurions, based at Darwen Leisure Centre is a competitive Swim England affiliated and SwimMark Essential Club, the only in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen. Swimmers compete and represent Blackburn Centurions across many competitive events where swimmers gain ASA times to qualify for County, Regional and National Championships. Ana Hopkin recently won a Bronze Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia 2018, she started her swimming career at Blackburn Centurions. The club trains at Daisyfield swimming pool Monday and Tuesday and at Darwen Leisure Centre Wednesday, Thursday Friday and Saturday.
